2nd Prize Pre Trading Winner

Living in international environments her whole life, Accounting and Finance student Flora has been lucky enough to experience and learn about a variety of different business types and cultures, most recently living in the emerging economy that is Hanoi, Vietnam.

As a competitive swimmer for her whole life and having first-hand experience in swimming equipment and kit, Flora noticed swimming goggles were extremely expensive in Vietnam. Imported brands are 50 percent higher than most countries and the market for high end goggles for an affordable price was there.

“The growth of the brand is essential, and therefore Freaky Fish will become a social brand with unboxing, campaigns, personalities and fun. The vision of ‘Life through a different lens’ will have real swimmers with real stories in real goggles. This will be the Freaky Fish community”

Freaky Fish

“In 2020 my father and I sourced and tested a range of swimming goggles. Eventually we established a relationship with a manufacturer located in Southeast Asia. Their economies of scale allowed us to purchase quality goggles at a low cost. We also developed unique packaging which makes the brand stand out.”

On joining the University of Leeds swimming society, Flora realised that the UK only has top end brands at high prices. There was the opportunity to bring high quality swimming goggles with a mid-range price tag.

Flora has since grown the Freaky Fish brand, setting up a website for UK customers, selling by fulfilment on Amazon and selling bulk to local swimming pools, swim clubs, leisure centres, societies and sports shops around the country.

The first unique selling point of Freaky Fish goggles is the eco-packaging. The stylish black box presents the goggles unmade with a range of nose bridges. This encourages the swimmer to choose the correct fit when putting them together. It is an unboxing experience which moves away from the usual plastic packaging by most other brands. Package sustainability and the unboxing is the first USP.
