Recognised Spark Business

Chris Terry and Lewis Colley graduated in 2021 with Masters in subjects related to sustainability, providing them with a solid foundation for successful self-employment.

As freelance sustainability consultants, the university friends joined forces and now deliver sustainability strategies and resources for microbreweries, local housing organisations and high street retailers.

Chris said, “I was introduced to Spark though the University’s Careers Centre, and I was impressed by their willingness to discuss, develop, and help me launch our business idea. Even though we were in the early stages of our business journey, they were on hand to help with tips, workshops and advice through a range of highly skilled mentors.”

Spark also made Chris aware of available funding opportunities to help aid their start up. The pair went on to secure a £1000 proof of concept grant which they have put to good use developing services for their consultancy practice.

Chris and Lewis have created a course accredited by the Carbon Literacy Project to help breweries understand the environmental impact of their carbon emissions. Chris explains, “The aim of this project is to encourage learners to become carbon literate within a short time frame - and most importantly to get as many people as possible actively involved in embedding climate solutions in their own life and work.

“Spark has given us insights into different areas of consultancy that we weren’t aware of and we’ve been presented with many levels of opportunity. But most importantly, Spark made us feel confident that the timing was right for us to take the plunge and set up our own business…and we haven’t looked back since!"
