When third year civil engineering student Louis Dale launched his business, Coastal CAD Tech, during his studies, he turned to the University’s business start-up team, Spark, to develop his enterprise skills. “I’m so glad I did,” he says, “as I really benefited from their business support, including getting advice from established businesses and experienced entrepreneurs.”
Coastal CAD Tech delivers technical drawings and 3D visuals for individuals and businesses in the construction industry across the UK, working on both domestic and commercial projects. A £1,000 boost in funding through Spark’s proof of concept grant in 2021 enabled Louis to invest in his business website and accelerate his company’s branding.

Louis credits Spark’s business mentoring scheme as his biggest influence. “The scheme linked me up with mentors actively involved in running their own companies, who successfully guided me through the twists and turns commonly faced when setting up and developing your own business.
